What Is DAO Treatment?
The DAO (Depressor Anguli Oris) muscle sits just below the corners of the mouth and is responsible for pulling them downward when we speak, frown or express tension. For some people, this creates a naturally downturned expression — even when they feel perfectly content.
How Treatment Helps
By placing a very small amount of treatment 1–2 cm below the corners of the mouth, we can gently reduce this downward pull. The aim isn’t to turn the corners upward — it’s simply to allow them to sit more neutrally, giving a softer, more relaxed expression.
This treatment also has a preventative benefit: the DAO connects to a small tendon behind it. When this tendon tightens repeatedly over time, it can encourage the lower cheek fat pad to descend, contributing to early jowling. Softening the DAO can help reduce this long‑term effect.
Common Concerns
People often tell me they feel they look sad or tired even when they’re not. Others notice heaviness around the lower face or early marionette lines. DAO treatment can help the area look more balanced and at ease.
Who This May Help
1. Those with naturally downturned corners who feel their expression doesn’t reflect how they feel.
2. Those with a strong family history of jowling — early, subtle treatment can help reduce the long‑term impact.
A Doctor‑Led, Safe Approach
I use a gentle, gradual approach — never over‑treating. As both a GP and aesthetics doctor, I take time to understand your natural expression, your goals and your facial anatomy. If treatment isn’t appropriate, I’ll explain this openly and guide you towards the right option.
What to Expect During Treatment
A couple of tiny injections are placed below the corners of the mouth. The doses are very small, and most people describe the sensation as quick and manageable.
What to Expect After Treatment
You may notice softening within several days, with full settling at around two weeks. Results typically last around three months.
