The Lip Flip in Worthing: What It Is, Who It Suits, and How It Differs from Filler

TL;DR — Key Takeaways

  • The lip flip uses botulinum toxin — not filler — to create the appearance of a fuller upper lip without adding volume.
  • It suits patients who want their upper lip to show more when smiling, or feel their lip “disappears” with expression.
  • It does not add volume. If volume loss is the concern, filler is the more appropriate treatment.
  • Duration is shorter than filler — approximately 6–10 weeks.

What Is the Lip Flip?

The lip flip is a technique in which a small amount of botulinum toxin (the same prescription medicine used for anti-wrinkle injections) is injected into the orbicularis oris — the circular muscle that surrounds and controls the lips. When this muscle is very slightly relaxed, the upper lip rolls gently outward, creating the impression of a fuller upper lip without any added volume.

It is a subtle treatment. The change is not dramatic — the goal is a slightly more visible upper lip at rest and when smiling, not a structural transformation. For patients who want the latter, filler is the more appropriate route.

Who Is the Lip Flip For?

  • People whose upper lip “disappears” or thins significantly when they smile
  • People who feel their upper lip is always slightly hidden, even at rest
  • Patients who want a minimal change and are wary of the commitment or cost of filler
  • Patients who are trying a treatment before committing to lip filler
  • Those who want to balance the proportions between upper and lower lip without structural change

Who Is It Not For?

  • Patients whose main concern is volume loss — the lip flip does not restore volume
  • Those wanting a visible, immediate increase in lip size
  • Patients with very little natural upper lip structure — relaxing a muscle that has little volume behind it produces minimal visible change
  • Patients who use a straw frequently or who play wind instruments — the temporary muscle relaxation affects pursing and may interfere with these activities for 6–10 weeks

Lip Flip vs Lip Filler: The Difference

This is the most common question Dr Halliday receives when patients come in asking about their lips. The short version: if volume is the concern, choose filler. If visibility of the upper lip when smiling is the concern, choose the lip flip. If you are unsure, the consultation will clarify which serves you. Read the full lip filler guide →

What to Expect at Treatment

The lip flip takes approximately 10–15 minutes. Topical numbing cream is applied beforehand. A very small amount of botulinum toxin is injected into several points around the upper lip border. There is minimal discomfort. You should avoid kissing, using a straw, or placing pressure on the lip area for 24 hours.

The effect develops gradually over 5–7 days as the botulinum toxin takes effect. Full result is visible at 10–14 days.

How Long Does the Lip Flip Last?

Approximately 6–10 weeks — significantly shorter than lip filler (6–12 months). The orbicularis oris is a high-movement muscle and the toxin metabolises faster in this location than in less-active areas such as the forehead. This makes the lip flip a lower-commitment option for patients who want to try a treatment before pursuing filler.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does the lip flip hurt?

Topical numbing cream is applied before treatment and most patients find discomfort minimal — a brief sting at each injection point. The total treatment takes 10–15 minutes.

Can I have a lip flip and lip filler together?

Yes. The lip flip and a small amount of lip filler can be used together for a combined effect. This is sometimes a very good approach for patients who want subtle volume and a better upper lip show when smiling. Dr Halliday will advise at consultation.

Will my speech be affected?

Slight changes to lip movement are possible in the first 1–2 weeks as you adjust. Most patients notice no functional impact. Some patients notice a slight change in their ability to pronounce certain sounds clearly — this settles as the effect wears off.

What if I don’t like the result?

Unlike HA filler, botulinum toxin cannot be reversed. However, the effect wears off completely within 6–10 weeks. If you do not like the result, waiting for it to fade is the path. This is one reason the shorter duration of the lip flip can actually be an advantage for first-time patients.
