In Short

  • Botulinum toxin blocks nerve signals to sweat glands — significantly reducing sweat production.
  • Results typically last 6-12 months — much longer than the 3-4 months typical of cosmetic facial applications.
  • The treatment is prescription-only and requires a clinical consultation including medical history review.
  • For many patients this is genuinely life-improving.

What Is Hyperhidrosis?

Primary hyperhidrosis is a condition in which the sweat glands produce significantly more sweat than is needed for temperature regulation — often regardless of temperature, exercise or anxiety. It is more common than most people realise, frequently undertreated, and carries a significant psychological and social impact.

The Treatment

Botulinum toxin is injected superficially across the treatment area, blocking nerve signals to the sweat glands. Results begin within 1-2 weeks and last 6-12 months.

Frequently Asked Questions

How long do results last?

6-12 months is typical — considerably longer than cosmetic anti-wrinkle facial applications. Most patients find a single annual treatment sufficient.

Is the treatment painful?

The injections are superficial and cover a larger area than facial treatments. Most patients find it very manageable — tolerable rather than painful.

Does treating underarms affect my ability to sweat elsewhere?

No. The treatment is localised to the treated area. The body continues to regulate temperature normally through sweat glands elsewhere.

How do I know if I have hyperhidrosis or just normal sweating?

If your sweating is significantly more than others in the same conditions, interferes with daily life or clothing choices, and standard antiperspirants have been ineffective, these are strong indicators. A consultation confirms the diagnosis and rules out secondary causes.

Does it work on palms or feet?

Botulinum toxin can be used for palmar and plantar hyperhidrosis though these areas are more complex to treat. Discuss at consultation.
