Do You Need NeoGen, or Something Gentler? A Doctor’s Honest Take

Where NeoGen sits on the regenerative ladder — why I don’t do RF microneedling, when laser is wrong, and the threshold for NeoGen.

By Dr Amber Halliday, MRCGP MBBS BSc (Hons) — GP & Aesthetics Doctor  |  Blue Bird Aesthetics, Worthing  |  Updated 2026

When people come in wanting “the strongest treatment” for their skin, my answer is usually: it depends what you are treating, and whether you are ready for it. NeoGen plasma is a powerful regenerative treatment, but it is not always the right one — and stronger is not automatically better. Here is how I decide.

Stronger is not better — right is better. The skill is matching the depth of the treatment to the depth of the problem, and to the person in front of me.

Who This Guide Is For

  • Anyone weighing up NeoGen against gentler skin treatments.
  • People curious about radiofrequency microneedling and whether they need it.
  • Anyone considering laser who also has pigmentation.
  • Those who want an honest view on commitment and downtime before they book.

TL;DR — Key Takeaways

Short on time? Here’s the summary:

Regenerative treatments sit on a ladder from gentle to strong — the right rung depends on your skin.

Microneedling helps, but an immediate visible change is not guaranteed.

I do not offer radiofrequency microneedling — in my view it does not trigger the deeper collagen cascade that NeoGen or laser do.

Laser can be excellent, but it is the wrong choice where there is pigmentation, which it can worsen.

NeoGen suits a real skin concern it can improve — if you accept the 5–7 days’ downtime and commit to aftercare.

Without good skincare afterwards, you simply will not get the most from an expensive treatment.

1. The regenerative ladder

I think of skin-regenerating treatments on a ladder, from gentle to strong: good skincare and facials at the base, then microneedling, then polynucleotides and skin boosters, and at the powerful end, NeoGen and resurfacing peels. The aim is to choose the lowest rung that will address your concern — not to leap to the top because it sounds impressive.

2. What microneedling will and won’t do

Microneedling is a genuine workhorse, but the common misconception is that you will see an immediate improvement. Sometimes you do; often it builds over a course. It is a steady, collagen-stimulating treatment, not an instant transformation — and managed that way, it is excellent. My microneedling guide covers it in detail.

3. Why I don’t offer radiofrequency microneedling

Radiofrequency microneedling and plain microneedling are quite different, and I have chosen not to offer the radiofrequency version. The common claim is that it tightens the tissue underneath long-term — but in my view the evidence does not show it triggering the same deeper collagen cascade that something like NeoGen, or laser, does. I would rather direct you to a treatment I am confident delivers what it promises.

4. When laser is the wrong choice

Laser and pigmentation do not mix well

Laser can be phenomenal for the right concern — but if you have pigmentation, it can be very damaging and make things worse. Pigmentation is the big contraindication I check for, and it is exactly why diagnosing the skin before choosing the tool matters so much.

5. The threshold for NeoGen

I will recommend NeoGen when there is a real skin concern it can improve — and when you understand and accept what it asks of you. That means the five to seven days of downtime, and a willingness to look after your skin properly afterwards with good skincare. NeoGen does powerful work; but without the aftercare, you will not get the most out of an expensive treatment.

My rule of thumb

NeoGen is right when the concern justifies it, the downtime suits your life, and you are ready to maintain the result with proper skincare. If any of those is missing, a gentler rung on the ladder is usually the better call.

An expensive treatment is only worth it if you protect what it gives you. The aftercare is part of the treatment, not an optional extra.

6. How I decide with you

In a consultation I assess your skin, your concern and your life, then recommend the right rung — sometimes NeoGen, often something gentler first. If you want to see how the main options compare side by side, my microneedling vs injectables vs NeoGen comparison lays it out.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do I need NeoGen or something gentler?

It depends on your concern and your readiness. Many people do better starting with microneedling, boosters or polynucleotides; NeoGen suits deeper concerns when you accept the downtime and aftercare.

Does microneedling give immediate results?

Not always. Sometimes you see a quick change, but more often it builds over a course. It is a steady collagen-stimulating treatment, not an instant fix.

Do you offer radiofrequency microneedling?

No. In my view it does not trigger the same deeper collagen response that NeoGen or laser do, so I prefer treatments I am confident in.

Is laser a good idea if I have pigmentation?

Often not. Laser can worsen pigmentation, so it is the wrong choice in many pigmented skins. The skin must be assessed first.

How much downtime does NeoGen have?

Around five to seven days. It is a real commitment, which is part of why I make sure it is the right treatment before recommending it.

Why does aftercare matter so much with NeoGen?

Because without good skincare afterwards you will not get the most from the treatment. The result needs protecting and maintaining.

Is NeoGen worth the cost?

When it is the right treatment for your concern and you commit to the downtime and aftercare, it does powerful work. If those do not fit, a gentler option is better value.

How do you decide which treatment I need?

At a consultation I assess your skin, your concern and your lifestyle, and recommend the lowest rung on the ladder that will help.

The Takeaway

The best regenerative treatment is not the strongest one — it is the one that matches your concern, your skin and your life. Often that is a gentler rung on the ladder first, with NeoGen held for when it is truly warranted.

And whatever we choose, the result is only as good as the care that follows it. That honesty about commitment is part of doing this properly.

If you are not sure which treatment you need, a consultation is the place to map it out.
