NeoGen Plasma vs IPL: A Doctor’s Guide to What Each Actually Does

IPL targets pigmentation and redness at the surface. NeoGen regenerates deeper. They often work together rather than against each other.

Of all the NeoGen comparisons I am asked about, this is the one where the treatments are most often complementary rather than competing. IPL (Intense Pulsed Light) targets specific chromophores — melanin and haemoglobin — to address surface pigmentation, broken capillaries and the redness of rosacea. NeoGen Plasma stimulates structural collagen and elastin regeneration in the dermis.

They are not alternatives. They address different layers of the same skin, and combining them — in the right patient, in the right order — can give a result neither achieves alone.

TL;DR — Quick Summary

Short on time? Here’s what matters:

IPL targets pigment and redness at the surface. NeoGen stimulates collagen and elastin in the dermis.

IPL is ideal for sun spots, broken capillaries, and surface redness from rosacea.

NeoGen is ideal for crepey texture, early laxity, eyelids and overall skin quality.

They are not rivals — they address different skin layers and can complement each other.

IPL is contraindicated for darker skin tones. NeoGen has broader suitability.

I do not offer IPL at Blue Bird Aesthetics; I can advise whether it belongs in your plan.

Which Should You Choose?

Choose NeoGen if…

Your primary concern is skin laxity, crepey texture, eyelid skin, or overall structural skin quality. Also the right choice if you have deeper sun damage rather than superficial sun spots.

Consider IPL alongside NeoGen if…

Surface pigmentation and redness are also part of your concern. In the right patient, IPL for the surface and NeoGen for the deeper regeneration can be a powerful combination — but IPL requires a clinic that offers it, which is not Blue Bird Aesthetics.

IPL and pigmentation caution

IPL can worsen certain types of pigmentation — particularly melasma. If your pigmentation is symmetrical or hormonally driven, it must be assessed before IPL is considered. More on this in my pigmentation guide.

Quick Questions

Can IPL and NeoGen be done together?

They are often combined in a treatment plan, targeting different layers. Timing and sequence matter; a specialist plan is needed.

Is IPL or NeoGen better for redness?

IPL targets vascular redness (broken capillaries, rosacea) effectively. NeoGen improves skin quality but does not directly target redness in the same way.

Which is better for sun damage?

IPL for surface spots and redness; NeoGen for deeper sun damage and skin quality. Combined, they address both layers.

Do you offer IPL?

Not currently. Where I believe IPL would complement a NeoGen plan, I will say so and direct you appropriately.

Is NeoGen safe on skin with lots of pigmentation?

With more caution than laser, yes. Assessment is important — a consultation establishes suitability.
