NeoGen Plasma vs Er:YAG Laser: Which Is Right for Your Skin?

Erbium laser resurfaces the surface. NeoGen regenerates from within. Here is the clinical difference.

By Dr Amber Halliday, MRCGP MBBS BSc (Hons) — GP & Aesthetics Doctor  |  Blue Bird Aesthetics, Worthing  |  Updated 2026

Er:YAG (erbium-doped yttrium aluminium garnet) laser is an ablative resurfacing treatment that removes the skin’s surface layers with precision. It is less aggressive than CO₂ laser, which gives it shorter downtime, but it is still ablative — it removes tissue rather than regenerating it. NeoGen Plasma works differently: controlled thermal energy stimulates the skin to rebuild collagen and elastin from within, without removing the surface.

Understanding this difference tells you which is right for your concern.

TL;DR — Quick Summary

Short on time? Here’s what matters:

Er:YAG is ablative — it removes the skin’s surface. NeoGen is regenerative — it rebuilds from within.

Er:YAG has less downtime than CO₂ but still involves surface removal and wound healing.

NeoGen has no open wounds: bronze tone and peeling, not raw skin.

Er:YAG suits surface texture and mild pigmentation on lighter skin tones.

NeoGen suits laxity, eyelids, crepiness, and broader skin tones.

Neither is universally better — the right choice depends on your skin and your goal.

Which Should You Choose?

Choose NeoGen if…

Your concern is crepey skin, early laxity, eyelids, or overall skin quality. Particularly appropriate if you have any pigmentation or a mixed/darker skin tone.

Consider Er:YAG if…

You have very superficial texture concerns or mild sun damage on a lighter skin tone, and want a surface resurfacing rather than a regenerative approach. This is a laser clinic treatment, not one I offer.

Er:YAG and NeoGen are not interchangeable. One resurfaces; the other regenerates. If your skin needs rebuilding from within — particularly around the eyes or with early laxity — NeoGen is the tool I reach for.

Quick Questions

Which has less downtime?

Er:YAG typically involves 3–5 days of recovery, less than CO₂ but still ablative. NeoGen involves 3–7 days of bronze tone and peeling, without open wounds. The recovery profiles differ in character as much as duration.

Is Er:YAG safe on darker skin?

It requires careful assessment. The ablative mechanism carries PIH risk in higher Fitzpatrick types. NeoGen has a broader suitability range.

Can Er:YAG treat eyelids?

Only with great caution and in specialist hands. NeoGen is specifically indicated for eyelid and peri-orbital skin.

Do you offer Er:YAG?

No. I offer NeoGen Plasma for regenerative skin treatment. Where laser resurfacing is the better answer, I will direct you to an appropriate specialist.

Can the two be combined?

They target overlapping concerns. In practice, a patient suited to one is often well served by that treatment alone; combining them would require careful specialist planning.
