NeoGen Plasma vs RF Microneedling: Why I Choose NeoGen

RF microneedling is widely marketed. NeoGen is my choice. Here is the clinical reasoning.

By Dr Amber Halliday, MRCGP MBBS BSc (Hons) — GP & Aesthetics Doctor  |  Blue Bird Aesthetics, Worthing  |  Updated 2026

RF microneedling — devices that combine needles with radiofrequency heat — is one of the most promoted skin treatments currently available. You will encounter it everywhere in West Sussex and beyond, often with significant tightening and lifting claims. I do not offer it at Blue Bird Aesthetics, and this is a considered decision rather than an oversight.

I want to explain my reasoning clearly, because patients deserve to understand why a doctor chooses one treatment over another.

TL;DR — Quick Summary

Short on time? Here’s what matters:

RF microneedling uses needles that deliver radiofrequency heat. NeoGen uses plasma with no needles.

I do not offer RF microneedling — my view is that the evidence for deep collagen remodelling does not meet the standard I apply.

RF microneedling at high settings can destroy facial fat — a risk I am not prepared to take in the face.

NeoGen is safe around the eyes. RF microneedling is not.

For acne scarring, RF microneedling has a stronger evidence base; I use microneedling for that indication.

If you have been told you need RF microneedling, a consultation will clarify whether NeoGen or microneedling addresses your concern.

Why I Choose NeoGen Over RF Microneedling

Two reasons. First, the evidence. RF microneedling is widely promoted as producing long-term tissue tightening. In my assessment, the evidence for deep collagen remodelling at the level claimed does not hold up to the same standard as NeoGen or ablative laser. I prefer treatments I am confident in.

Second, the fat loss risk. At higher RF settings, subcutaneous fat can be destroyed. In the body, this may be a goal. In the face, where fat compartments are precisely what gives structure, volume and youth, it is a risk I will not take with patients’ faces. NeoGen does not have this risk.

If you have been recommended RF microneedling…

It is worth understanding the basis for that recommendation. Ask what the treatment is expected to achieve, what the evidence is, and whether an alternative such as NeoGen or microneedling would address your concern. My guide to NeoGen or something gentler covers this decision in detail.

Quick Questions

Is NeoGen better than Morpheus8?

In my clinical view, yes for most of the concerns my patients present with: eyelids, laxity, crepiness, skin quality. For deep acne scarring, I use microneedling, which has a stronger and cleaner evidence base than RF microneedling.

Why don’t you offer RF microneedling?

A considered clinical decision. The evidence for the tightening claims does not meet my standard, and the fat loss risk at higher settings is one I am not prepared to introduce into facial treatment.

What about the tightening effect of RF?

RF does heat tissue and there is some collagen response. My assessment is that it does not trigger the same deep cascade that NeoGen or laser create. This is a clinical opinion, and the evidence in this area continues to develop.

What do you offer instead for skin tightening?

NeoGen for surface-to-mid laxity and crepiness. For significant structural laxity, I will be direct that surgery is the appropriate answer.

If I want acne scarring treated?

Microneedling — with polynucleotides for more significant scarring — is my approach. It has a strong, consistent evidence base.
