NeoGen Plasma vs CO₂ Laser: A Doctor’s Comparison
Two routes to skin regeneration — one ablative, one not. A doctor explains the difference and who each suits.
By Dr Amber Halliday, MRCGP MBBS BSc (Hons) — GP & Aesthetics Doctor | Blue Bird Aesthetics, Worthing | Updated 2026
CO₂ laser is the most aggressive resurfacing tool in aesthetic medicine. NeoGen Plasma is the most significant regenerative one. They are not the same kind of treatment, and confusing them leads to patients either expecting too much from NeoGen or tolerating more downtime than they need to from laser. Here is the clear, clinical comparison.
TL;DR — Quick Summary
Short on time? Here’s what matters:
✓ CO₂ laser ablates — it vaporises columns of skin. NeoGen regenerates — no open wounds.
✓ CO₂ suits deep wrinkles and significant acne scarring on lighter skin tones.
✓ NeoGen suits eyelids, crepey texture, early laxity, and a broader range of skin tones.
✓ CO₂ has higher PIH risk in darker Fitzpatrick types. NeoGen is significantly safer.
✓ CO₂ is not safely used around the eyes. NeoGen is one of the best eyelid treatments available.
✓ I offer NeoGen in Worthing. I do not offer CO₂ laser — this comparison helps you decide which to seek.
| NeoGen Plasma | CO₂ Laser | |
|---|---|---|
| Mechanism | Nitrogen plasma — regenerative | Light energy vaporises skin columns — ablative |
| Open wounds | No | Yes — requires wound care |
| Downtime | 3–7 days bronze/peeling | 7–14 days raw skin, crusting |
| Pain | Topical anaesthetic sufficient | Often nerve blocks or sedation |
| Eyelids | Yes — a key indication | High risk — rarely used |
| Pigmented skin tones | Lower PIH risk; broader range | Higher PIH risk in darker types |
| Depth of effect | Mid-to-deep dermis, regenerative | Deep ablation with collagen remodelling |
| Best for | Laxity, crepiness, eyelids, quality | Severe wrinkles, deep scarring |
Which Should You Choose?
Choose NeoGen if…
You want eyelid treatment, have some pigmentation in your skin, want a predictable recovery with no open wounds, or your main concern is crepey texture, early laxity or overall skin quality.
Consider CO₂ laser if…
You have severe, deep wrinkles or significant acne scarring on lighter skin, and are prepared for a more intensive recovery. This requires a specialist laser clinic — not something I offer at Blue Bird Aesthetics.
Most of my West Sussex patients who come asking about CO₂ laser are, once when we talk through their actual goals, better suited to NeoGen. The downtime is shorter, the eyelids can be treated, and the result is regenerative rather than ablative.

Quick Questions
Is NeoGen as effective as CO₂ laser?
For the concerns NeoGen is designed for — eyelids, crepey texture, early laxity — yes. For deep wrinkles or significant acne scarring, CO₂ may deliver more dramatic results, but with substantially greater downtime and risk.
Which is safer for darker skin tones?
NeoGen carries significantly lower post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation risk and is suitable for a broader Fitzpatrick range. CO₂ laser requires careful assessment and is higher risk on darker tones.
Can NeoGen treat the eyelids?
Yes — it is one of NeoGen’s strongest indications. CO₂ laser is not safely used around the eyes.
How long does NeoGen last vs CO₂?
Both can produce results lasting 1–2 years with appropriate aftercare. NeoGen results typically develop over 3–6 months; CO₂ results may appear faster but involve a longer recovery.
Do you offer CO₂ laser?
I do not. I offer NeoGen Plasma, which I believe is the right tool for the majority of the regenerative concerns my patients present with. Where CO₂ is the better answer, I will say so and direct you appropriately.
Ready to find out which is right for you?
We’ll assess your skin and tell you whether NeoGen is the right choice — or whether you’d benefit more from seeing a laser specialist.
