What Happens at Your First Aesthetics Consultation: An Honest Guide
What the assessment looks like, why the conversation matters more than the treatment, and the most important thing to leave with.

TL;DR — Key Takeaways
Short on time? Here’s the summary:
✓ A first consultation at Blue Bird Aesthetics is a conversation, not a prescription — nothing is necessary, nothing is pushed.
✓ Assessment begins before you have said a word: general health, energy and how the skin is presenting all tell me something.
✓ The consultation is about understanding your life, your goals, your timeline and your budget — not about selling you a treatment.
✓ The most common misconception: that I will tell you what you need. I will help you find what you want, candidly.
✓ Nervous patients: nothing we do will stop your phone recognising you. The goal is you at your best, five to ten years fresher.
✓ The most important thing to leave with is not a booking — it is the habit of daily SPF.
It Is Not Like Going to the GP When You Are Unwell
One of the first things I say to patients is this: none of this is necessary. None of it is essential in the way that a blood pressure pill is essential, or antibiotics are. Coming here is not like coming to your GP because something is wrong. It is a conversation about developing a plan that allows you to feel the best version of yourself — and only if that is what you want.
That framing changes the whole nature of the appointment. There is no pressure, no product to sell, no outcome I am steering you towards before we have even spoken. The consultation is the treatment.
None of this is necessary. None of it is essential. It is a conversation about how to feel the best you can — and only if that is what you want.

What I Am Noticing Before You Have Said a Word
My assessment begins from the moment you walk through the door. I am not making clinical judgements or planning treatments — but I am noticing things. Your general health and energy. How you are moving. Whether you look rested or tired, stressed or settled.
When you sit down, I will look at your face: the skin’s quality and resilience, whether it looks dehydrated or bouncy, any obvious lines or discolouration. But I do not make decisions about what we should do until you speak. I am not there to judge your face. I am there to help with what you do not like about it — and those are very different starting points.
The Chatty Part — the Bit I Love Most
The real consultation is the conversation. I want to understand your life — your stress levels, the time you realistically have, what you want to achieve and how you want to achieve it. Do you want to come regularly as part of your self-care routine? Do you want to come once and see how it feels? Is budget a factor in what we plan?
These questions matter because the right plan for someone who is coming just once looks very different from a plan for someone who wants ongoing maintenance. And a plan that fits your finances will serve you far better than an aspirational one that does not.
What ‘understanding the patient first’ looks like in practice
It looks like talking for twenty minutes before anyone mentions a treatment. Learning that your main concern is not what you initially said it was. Finding out that what you thought you wanted is not quite right for your face — and that there is a better answer.
What Happens When What You Ask for Is Not What I Would Recommend
This happens more than people expect, and I see it as one of the most important parts of the consultation. Recently a patient came in booked for microneedling. When we talked it through, her main concern was discolouration and melasma — and for that, a course of resurfacing peels was going to give a significantly better result at a similar cost. She was happy to change the plan, and we did her first peel that same day.
It is not about overriding what someone wants. It is about being the expert in the room and using that expertise to help them achieve their actual goal. Sometimes the speed or order of treatment is different from what they imagined. Sometimes the treatment is different entirely. A good consultation makes that clear, calmly.
For Nervous First-Timers
The biggest anxiety I hear is not about pain or cost. It is “what if I don’t recognise myself afterwards?” And my answer is always the same: nothing I do will stop your phone recognising you. We are not here to change your face. We are here to find you at your best.
The goal I describe to patients is this: you, as though you have drunk all your water, eaten all your greens, slept eight hours, and life is not taking its toll on your skin that day. That version of you, maybe five to ten years fresher. Not a different person. Not surgery. Just you, restored.
We are not here to change your face. We are here to find you at your best — rested, nourished, five to ten years fresher. That is the whole goal.

On Feeling Embarrassed
I hear this a lot: “I’m not vain, but…” And I always want to gently push back on the idea that caring about your skin is vanity. You do not feel embarrassed going to the gym to look after your muscles. You do not feel embarrassed taking vitamins or eating well for your organs. Your skin is your largest organ, and it is the part of you that faces the world every day. There is nothing to be embarrassed about in looking after it.
How to Decide If You Are Weighing Up Options
The best approach when you are truly unsure between two good options is to take the information away with you. Most people settle on a direction within 48 to 72 hours once they have had time to think. You are always welcome to message with follow-up questions. There is no clock running.
What to Take Away from the Consultation
The most surprising thing for many new patients is that they leave without a booking — and that was the right outcome. The plan came first. Booking followed when the time was right.
The most important thing to leave with, regardless of whether you book: wear a physical SPF on your face, neck, chest, forearms and hands every day. Summer, winter, spring, autumn. That one habit does more for your skin than almost any treatment I can offer.

Frequently Asked Questions
What happens at a first consultation?
We talk. I learn about your concerns, your life, your goals and your budget. I look at your skin and face. At the end, I give you my honest assessment of what would help — and what would not. There is no pressure to proceed.
Will you tell me what I need?
Not exactly. This is not like a medical appointment where the answer is clear and the doctor prescribes it. This is a collaborative conversation. I bring clinical expertise; you bring knowledge of what you want. We find the plan together.
Do I have to book treatment at the consultation?
No. Many patients leave with a plan and book later, or go away to think first. The consultation fee (£50) is redeemable against any future treatment.
What if I just want to find out what is possible?
That is exactly what consultations are for. Many patients come with no clear idea of what they want — just a general sense that they want to look fresher or more rested. We work it out together.
Will it be obvious I have had something done?
Not with conservative, doctor-led treatment. The goal is not ‘done’ — it is you at your best, in a way that people notice but cannot quite explain.
I am nervous about the idea of treatment. Is that okay?
Entirely. The consultation is a safe, low-pressure space. You will not be rushed or persuaded into anything. Many patients come in nervous and leave simply feeling informed — which is a perfectly good outcome.
What should I do before my consultation?
Bring a clean face if possible, so I can see your skin clearly. Come prepared to talk about what bothers you, not just what you want done. And bring any products you currently use — they tell me a lot.
What is the most important thing to do after?
Wear a physical SPF on your face, neck, chest, forearms and hands every single day. That one habit makes more difference to your skin than almost any treatment. Also: download the Blue Bird app — it keeps everything in one place.
