In Short

  • Texture concerns live within the dermis and need collagen-stimulating treatments, not volume.
  • Microneedling has strong clinical evidence for pore size and surface smoothness.
  • Chemical peels and nanoneedling are complementary and sometimes the better starting point.
  • Medical-grade skincare is the foundation that makes all treatments work better.

What Causes It?

  • Sebum and pore size — pore visibility increases as surrounding dermal collagen support weakens with age.
  • Collagen decline — thinner dermis creates a less smooth skin surface.
  • UV damage — breaks down collagen and creates surface irregularities over time.
  • Post-acne changes — even controlled acne can leave the skin surface uneven.

Treatments That Help

What Will Not Help

  • Dermal fillers — placed too deep to improve surface texture.
  • Anti-wrinkle injections — address muscle movement, not skin surface quality.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can you actually shrink pores?

You cannot change pore size permanently but you can significantly improve their appearance. As collagen strengthens through microneedling or peels, pores appear smaller and tighter. This is a real, measurable improvement.

How many microneedling sessions do I need?

For texture and pore improvement: a course of three sessions, spaced 4-6 weeks apart. Acne scarring typically requires four to six sessions.

Does skin look worse before better after microneedling?

You may notice the skin appears rougher or flaky in the first few days as healing occurs. By week 2-4, improvement is usually visible. Full results from a course take 3-6 months.

Will a home dermaroller give the same results as clinic microneedling?

No. Medical-grade microneedling reaches significantly deeper, uses sterile single-use cartridges and allows depth adjustment per area. Home rollers are not equivalent and carry infection risks from reuse.

Can I have microneedling with active rosacea?

Stable mild rosacea may be compatible with nanoneedling. Active inflamed rosacea is a contraindication. Consultation determines individual suitability.
